Next AfA conference in Bali

A “bile bear” —an animal emblematic of the exploitation and victimization of animals in Asia.


The NEXT Asia for Animals animal welfare conference will be held in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia from the 27th of August until the 29th of August, 2008. The venue is the renowned and highly accessible Sanur Beach Hotel in Sanur, until recently an idyllic fishing village on the eastern coastline of Bali. The yellow sand beach is safe and numerous water sports - swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, outrigger sailing and windsurfing - are on offer. A visit to Turtle Island (Serangan) by hired boat is also a possibility for a close encounter with these beautiful sea creatures. The menu will be vegetarian—mainly vegan withthe exception of certified free-range eggs in some dishes. {Please visit our main site for complete details:

The Plight of the Bile Bears

While some progress has finally been made, bile bears continue to suffer 

Commerce, tradition, poverty and ignorance combine to enslave and brutally exploit this species.

A bile bear or battery bear is the term used for Asiatic black bears kept in captivity in Vietnam and China so that bile may be extracted from them for sale as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The bears are also known as moon bears because of the cream-colored crescent moon shape on their chest.[1] The Asiatic black bear, the one most commonly used on bear farms, is an endangered species.
